History of Father’s Day

Today I want to talk about Father’s Day, which is coming up soon. Do you know how this holiday started and why we celebrate it? Well, I did some research and here’s what I found out.

Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. She wanted to honor her father, who was a Civil War veteran and a single dad of six children. She thought fathers deserved a special day just like mothers, who already had Mother’s Day since 1908.

She chose June 19 as the date for Father’s Day because it was her father’s birthday. She got support from local churches, businesses, and officials, and the idea spread across the country. However, it took a long time for Father’s Day to become an official national holiday. It wasn’t until 1972 that President Nixon signed a law making Father’s Day a permanent holiday on the third Sunday of June.

Today, Father’s Day is a time to celebrate all the fathers and father figures in our lives, whether they are biological, adoptive, step, or foster. We can show our appreciation by sending cards, giving gifts, or spending quality time with them.

So that’s a brief history of Father’s Day. How do you plan to celebrate Father’s Day this year? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
